Assessment Support

Successful assessments start with a great plan—and we can help!

Before reaching out, consider:

  1. What are my goals with this assessment? What am I trying to learn?
  2. Who or what am I assessing? Do I have a target population?
  3. Who will I share results with?

Once you answer these basic questions, you can start to map out a plan. We can help you select the best assessment method, tools, and even help with analysis.

For more information about Assessment, check out our Library Assessment LibGuide for the public. Here you can find helpful resources, like:

  • Books and journals on assessment practices
  • Assessment Methods
  • Planning
  • Design and Sampling
  • Data Analysis Tools and Methods, and
  • A Very Helpful Glossary!

Statistical and Data Analysis plus Visualization

You have many options to get support with statistical or data analysis!

  • Work with us in APCS! Our Data Analyst can support your efforts, especially with library statistics.
  • Work with OIT! OIT offers Research Computing Support. They also license software to support your efforts.
  • Work with Data & Digital Scholarship team in the Library! They can help you create a data management plan and support other data needs.

Some of our favorite tools:

  • R and R Studio- R is a free, open-source software environment for statistical computing, data management, and graphics.
  • NVivo- NVivo is a qualitative analysis software package that supports both qualitative and mixed methods research.
  • Qualtrics- Qualtrics is a powerful online survey research too.
  • Alma Analytics- Alma Analytics is a built-in, web-based tool within the Alma library management system that allows users to analyze and report on library data.
  • PowerBI- For complex reports and dashboards. Great for multiple data sources. There is the app version which you can find in your Microsoft Apps, or the desktop version
  • LibInsight- For simple data analysis and visualization. LibInsight is part of our LibApps software. See the Reporting Tools tab for more information.

Survey Support

While you can use any survey software you like, we recommend using Qualtrics. Qualtrics is licensed by UT Knoxville.

We can assist in planning surveys, especially in Qualtrics, by crafting a well-structured survey with meaningful questions to get the information you need.

Linked below are some best practices for conducting surveys.

Any human research study needs to be approved by our campus Institutional Review Board. This is a detailed process and can feel quite overwhelming the first time. Use some of these resources below to help!

The Human Research Protection Program (HRPP) "is responsible for ensuring the ethical and equitable treatment of all human subjects in research conducted under the university’s auspices." You can contact them with your IRB questions through email or drop in during their virtual office hours.

The Libraries Departmental Review Committee (DRC) reviews all research projects involving human participants proposed by faculty or staff in the Libraries. When you submit to the IRB, your proposal will get routed to the Libraries DRC committee for approval. If you have questions about your study, talk to the DRC.
