UT Libraries conducts many assessments that occur annually or at recurring intervals to measure progress toward goals, track changes over time, and adapt. We also provide information to the University and outside organizations for accreditation purposes.
Measuring Information Service Outcomes Survey, or the MISO Survey, is a survey that UTK Libraries conducts approximately biannually.
"The MISO Survey provides robust, actionable, comparable results that participating institutions can use to inform strategic decisions and ongoing service improvement."
The survey is managed by Bryn Mawr College and administered for our institution by Assessment Programs and Collection Strategy. This survey is typically distributed early in the Spring of to a select number of students, staff, and faculty across all disciplines.
We receive detailed information about user demographics, patron satisfaction with our services, and more. This detailed information helps us measure growth and success. It also highlights gaps in services and helps the Libraries plan for the future.
The MISO survey can be customized for each iteration, but generally covers frequency of use, the importance respondents place on particular services, their satisfaction with those services, and the extent to which they fell informed about library services. APCS works with stakeholdiers from across the Libraries to update and customize the survey.
Custom-designed, homegrown surveys were used in 1994, 1998, and 2000. To enable peer comparisons, the LibQual+ survey, developed by the Association of Research Libraries, was administered in 2002, 2004, 2006, 2009, and 2013. Concerns with the complexity of the LibQual+ instrument led to the use of LibQual+ Lite in 2013 and its replacement with the MISO instrument in 2017.
The Association of Research Libraries Statistics Survey is a survey we contribute to annually.
This survey collects data that describe the collections, overall library expenditures, materials expenditures, staffing, and operational and service activities of member libraries.
We use data from ARL Statistics Annual Survey and ASERL's Equivalent Statistics, the ACRL Academic Library Trends and Statistics Survey, and the IPEDS Surveys to allow quantitative comparisons with a variety of peer groups.
It is a reflection of our expenditures based on FTE, budget, staffing, and more.
