Secondary data sets for use in research

Finding Community Profiles on American FactFinder

American FactFinder 
Follow these steps to find general profiles for your city, town, county, or state.

1. Select Community Facts from the main FactFinder page
2. Enter city, town, zip code, county, or state 
3. You will see various data tables retrieved about your community
4. Click on the facets in the left column to see totals for population, age, business, education, etc.

Finding Profiles in the Social Explorer Database

Social Explorer
Current and historical Census data and other demographics. Create reports and maps.

To find community profiles:
1. Select Data & Tools then Browse Reports
2. Select a dataset from the list e.g. Census 2010
3. Use pull down the 'nation' box to select your geographic area, e.g. place (city), etc.
4. Select state, then select place by name - use CTRL -CLICK to select more than one.
5. Click ADD and NEXT
6. Select "premade reports". Select "essentials OR comprehensive report" or select by table  
7. Click "add" then "Show Results"
8.  Click next to see the complete list of results 

Before You Begin

Before you begin, you should answer these questions.
1. What geography? County, city, town, census tract, zipcode?
2. What type of data do you need? e.g. population, social, economic? 
3. What years do you want? 
4. Would a general profile be adequate?

Census Tracts

American FactFinder - Census Bureau

Go the 'Advanced Search' in American FactFinder.
Enter the topic you need in the first box e.g. population.

In the second box select your geography, census tracts, state, and county. Select all tracts or a combination of tracts by highlighting and holding down the CTRL key.

Close the selection box, then select the appropriate table in the results. Choose latest census year or current data from the American Community Survey.

General Demographics

American FactFinder - Census Bureau
Find demographic and economic data from the Census of Population & Housing, the American Community Survey, and the Economic Census. Provides data for all geographies including the U.S., states, counties, cities, towns and 5-digit zip codes.
Select Community Facts to find popular data about communities.

QuickFacts
Provides frequently requested Census information at the national, state, county, and city level.

Federal statistics on a variety of demographic and economic indicators. Comparable indicators for 3,141 counties nationwide plus unique side-by-side comparisons.
