The Culture Corner & Research Guides

The Culture Corner is an initiative of the University of Tennessee Libraries’ Belonging and Engagement Committee. The Corner is located on the second floor of Hodges Library in the Dixie Marie Wooten Commons West and displays books and e-book titles from the Libraries’ collection that address a chosen cultural theme.

These research guides have been created to support the Culture Corner themes and also are a component of the Libraries’ Virtual Culture Corners (lib.utk.edu/belonging/virtual-culturecorner).

Women & Iranian Culture (Spring 2023)
This guide includes resources that explore the topic of women and Iranian culture. For each subject tab, print and e-books are listed. In addition, selected lists of media resources (DVDs, streaming audio and video), journals, databases, and websites are featured.
The Asian American & Pacific Islander (AAPI) Perspective (2022)
This guide includes resources that explore the cultures and traditions of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders and offer perspectives on a variety of AAPI topics and issues. "Asian Art at the McClung Museum" highlights various objects in the University of Tennessee's McClung Museum of Natural History & Culture. "AAPI Music" includes music resources from several cultures. Each tab under "Resources" lists books (print and e-books) and media (streaming audio, video, DVDs, CDs). In addition, selected lists of journals, databases, and websites are featured.
Round Dance: Learning from Native Stories & Voices (2020-2021)
This guide offers resources and materials that explore Native American cultures and traditions. Books (print and e-books), media, and Native American authors are included as well as art and music resources and selected conversations via Podcasts.
A Conversation About Race (Fall 2019)
This guide was created to support the UT Libraries’ organizational read, which occurred during the 2019-2020 academic year. Many library staff and faculty read White Fragility: Why It’s So Hard for White People to Talk About Racism by Robin DiAngelo and participated in discussions about the concepts presented in the book. Library resources related to the book’s topics are included on this guide, from print and e-books to streaming media and DVD documentaries.
First-Generation College Students (Spring 2019)
This research guide focuses on conversations and discussions pertaining to first-generation college students, students for which neither parent or legal guardian has completed a four-year college degree or higher. It supports the University’s first-generation initiatives (https://studentsuccess.utk.edu/first-gen/) and includes lists of print and e-book titles.
