Sanborn Maps

Sanborn Fire Maps Insurance Maps were created in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century to document city buildings in case of fire.  They include extensive information about city infrastructure and about the buildings themselves.  The Library of Congress site has an excellent information about the maps and the codes used by the cartographers to differentiate building types and functions.
