Citation Styles

Most web sites dedicated to citation styles will give examples of how to cite sources in the selected style. None, however, should be considered to represent the complete style manual. Call numbers and locations are provided for print manuals in the UT Libraries collections.

For your use, I have provided the names, styles, location or call numbers for several materials you may eventually use:

  • MLA and APA documentation styles: The Hodges Harbrace Handbook, Research Assistance Desk, PE1112.H6.
  • Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (Print) Research Assistance Desk, BF76.7.P83
  • MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers (Print), Research Assistance Desk, LB2369.G53 2009
  • The Bluebook: A Uniform System of Citation (Print) Hodges Reference KF246 .U58
  • US Government Printing Office Style Manual linked here

This guide also has links below to citation management programs and websites which may assist in citation.

Citation Management

Various citation management software packages are available to the students, faculty and staff of UTK. It can be difficult to decide which to use. Consult this chart for further information.

EndNote can be used to organize your resesarch (citations, full-text articles, images, notes), automatically generate in-text citations and bibliography as you write, automatically create bibliographies for Canvas, and use templates to format papers for submission to journals. EndNote is available to all University of Tennessee, Knoxville students, faculty and staff at no charge! Visit our EndNote page to learn more and to download the software.

Zotero is a free online bibliographic management tool. It works within your Firefox browser to help you collect, manage, and cite your research sources. Zotero allows you to collect all types of information, organize and annotate these sources, and access these anywhere you have internet access.
