In February 2024, thousands of people will celebrate Douglass Day, an annual event held to celebrate the birthday of Frederick Douglass. Members of the public are invited to join this celebration by joining us at the University of Tennessee for a series of events to honor Douglass and to contribute to Black literary history!
The main event will be the Frederick Douglass Day Celebration and Transcribe-a-thon on Wednesday, February 14, 12 PM - 3 PM, on the 12th Floor of McClung Tower. We will be logging on to DouglassDay.org to help transcribe records from Frederick Douglass’ own correspondence.
There are also two plenary speakers on Thursday, February 15 at 4:30pm in the Auditorium in Hodges Library. The two speakers are as follows:
- 'Let Me Tell You Something': Black women, Placemaking, and Work in a Southern Empire by Dr. Latoya E. Eaves, Associate Professor, Geography and Sustainability
- Our Good Fortune: A History of Black Banking in the American South by Dr. Brandon K. Winford, Associate Professor, History
Sponsored by UT Departments of English, History, and Africana Studies; UT Humanities Center, UT Libraries, and UT Special Collections
