Many business resources and databases search by industry codes - NAICS or SIC codes.
Both, the NAICS and SIC numeric codes, were initially assigned to business segments by the U.S. government for collecting statistical data about each industry. The NAICS (North American Industry Classification System) codes were adopted in 1997 to replace the older Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) system as it was originally developed in the 1930s, however, the SIC system is still used by some today.
NAICS are 6-digit codes and SIC is a 4-digit code.
