Pros and Cons of Using AI for Literature Searching: Google Scholar

Google Schoar

"Google Scholar includes journal and conference papers, theses and dissertations, academic books, pre-prints, abstracts, technical reports and other scholarly literature from all broad areas of research." The user can save references in a Library and export small batches of citations. It is recommended that the user use Publish or Perish to download large amounts of Google Scholar papers and export them to citation managers.

Pros

  • Most likely has higher sensitivity/recall --retrieval of relevant results-- than other AI tools due to wider coverage.
  • Easy to use with simple interface
  • Highlights relevant snippets in results
  • Relevance ranking seems to work well, although algorithm is not transparent.

Cons

  • Export to citation managers is a weakness, as information is sometimes left out and one can only export one citation or a small batch of citations from the Library at a time.
