Pros and Cons of Using AI for Literature Searching: Elicit

Elicit

Elicit searches Semantic Scholar for references. It answers chat queries with a summary containing the top four references with more references displayed below the answer.  Paid plans allow more extraction of data, citation exports, and other features. The free plan allows limited use of data extraction in Research Reports that are methodologically superior reports using screening criteria (data extraction from 10 papers of 50 papers screened).

Pros

  • Clean, well-organized interface
  • Some chatting with PDFs allowed (more with paid plans)
  • Has advanced features to aid with systematic reviews, but should not be used in place of library databases, critical thinking, and cross-checking.
  • Has "Research Report" feature that allows advanced searching and synthesis of information. It screens for articles that exceed a quality threshold and extracts information from them, resulting in fewer but higher quality results. Links to the sources used in the report allows checking for hallucinations or misattribution of information to sources.

Cons

  • May miss some bibliographic elements in citation export
