Pros and Cons of Using AI for Literature Searching: Perplexity

Perplexity ai

Perplexity AI has web, academic and social media sources that you can choose for a search.  The web focus searches web sites and the academic focus searches scholarly sources, although it is not clear what method Perplexity uses to identify these.  One may also specify a site to search such as PubMed. The Deep Research feature (free for limited usage) generates an indepth report, while the auto presents a shorter answer.

Pros

  • Provides a readable answer to a question with linked sources
  • Can limit to a site such as PubMed
  • Searches the web, and so can provide an up-to-date answer, which some older LLM models did not do
  • Perplexity Deep Research allows in-depth searching and summarizing, producing answers with a scholarly tone.
  • Some free Pro searches are allowed every few hours.
  • The Pro version allows use of most recent  LLMs in searching.

Cons

  • Uses relatively few sources in its answers
  • Has some hallucinations (may say information is in a source but it is not found in the source, or some sources may be made up)
  • May sources without vetting quality if academic focus is not used
