Research Study Title:  Reading the Rainbow: Access to LGBTQ+ Books in Knox, Blount, Anderson, Jefferson, Sevier, Loudon, Roane, Union, and Grainger

Researcher(s): Donna Braquet, Hodges Library, University of Tennessee, Knoxville

Why am I being asked to be in this research study?

We are asking you to be in this research study because you identify as LGBTQ+, live in Knoxville or its surrounding counties, and are 18 years or older.

What is this research study about?

The purpose of the research study is to understand the topics, genres, and formats LGBTQ+ people want, where they get books, and their experiences with libraries.

How long will I be in the research study?

If you agree to participate in this study, you will take a survey that takes about 15 minutes to complete.

What will happen if I say "Yes, I want to be in this research study"?

If you agree to be in this study, you will answer questions on an online survey. If you decide that you do not want to participate anymore, you can stop taking the survey. If you do not finish the survey, your answers will be discarded because we will assume that you decided to stop your participation.

What happens if I say "NO, I do not want to be in this research study"?

Being in this study is up to you. If you do not want to be in this study, do not click the button below to enter the study. Or, once you start the survey you can just not finish it. You can say no at the start or leave the study later. Either way, your decision will not affect your relationship with the researcher at the University of Tennessee.

What happens if I say "Yes" but change my mind later?

Even if you decide to be in the study now, you can change your mind and stop at any time, even if during the survey. You can simply just stop the survey and we will discard any answers you had entered up until that point.

Are there any possible risks to me?

There is very little risk to you since the survey does not ask for your name or any personal identifying information. The results will be shared in a way that no one could tell who gave the answers. If you choose to enter the raffle, we will ask for your name and email so that we can contact you if you win. Your contact information will not be connected to your survey results in any way. If you are a winner, we will email you and ask for your mailing address so that the gift certificate can be mailed to you. As soon as the four raffle winners are selected, the form with all of the entrants' names/emails will be deleted.

Are there any benefits to being in this research study?

There is no benefit to you. Your participation may help us to learn more about what LGBTQ+ people want to read and how libraries could do better.  We hope the knowledge gained from this study will benefit others in the future.

Who can see or use the information collected for this research study?

The researcher and other researchers who have been approved will have access to the information collected in this study. What you share during this survey will be used to create public reports and data visuals (such as charts or maps); to write academic journal articles, book chapters, and books; in presentation materials for academic and non-academic conferences. Any identifying characteristics about you will not be shared anywhere publicly at any time since this survey does not ask your name. Any publications or conference presentations in which your direct words are used will make you unidentifiable. Only those who are directly participating in this research project at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville (approved by the Institutional Review Board of the University) will have access to your survey answers.

What will happen to my information after this study is over?

We will not keep your information to use for future research. After we have finished this research project and have analyzed all of the answers, your answers will be permanently deleted. The results will be deleted by 2025 or when the project is finished, whichever comes first. We will not share your research data with other researchers.

Compensation

You can enter your name and email for a chance to win a $25 gift certificate to South Press Coffee. You can enter the raffle regardless of if you fill out the survey or not. Your name and email will be collected separately so that it is not connected to your answers. There will be a total of 4 gift certificates available in the drawing. If you win, the researcher will email you and ask for your mailing address. The gift certificate will be mailed to you.
