What Is Open Access Week?

Open access week is
a celebration of the principles of open access and an
attempt to create awareness about the related scholarly communication
issues. For more information about Open Access see: Peter Suber's Open Access Overview or visit OASIS. Or click here for addtional resouces.
During the week of October 18 - 22 the library hosted events designed to inform the University community about this
important issue. Worldwide, this years celebrations were the most successful ever.
Issues of scholarly communication are not restricted to one week
out of the year, and neither are the resources on this guide.
Open access is an effort to modernize scholarly communication to
take advantage of changes in technology and remove barriers to
accessing information.
In the words of Peter Suber: "OA removes price barriers (subscriptions,
licensing fees, pay-per-view fees) and permission barriers (most
copyright and licensing restrictions)."
